[ Hi! Quick note: I don't update this site on a regular basis -- although it is home to my design work and links to some of my writing around the web. To keep up with my regular writing, check out the blog "it starts with" or the landscape urbanism website. ] |
some of my stories:I am a writer and storyteller. I write the blog "it starts with" about psychology and the art of making things happen, which has been featured on Life Hacker, Revolution. Is, The Art Of NonConformity, Idea Mensch, and many other sites. I love books and all things print, moleskine, text, graphics, layout, design, and words-related. I have too many bookshelves and too many books I can't wait to read. I sometimes write about my favorite books. I draw sketches of my ideas and thinking, visualizing processes and strategies and simplifying concepts into tangible pieces. The "career cheat sheet," and "52 notes on life," resonated with a few people. I like understanding what motivates people and why we do what we do; I think the key to success is through experimentation and action. The "Do Something" presentation hit 90,000 views after it launched December 2011. In September 2011, I founded of the landscape urbanism website and journal--after winning the 2010 SWA Patrick Curran Fellowship. The site explores cities and landscape and the future of our urban conditions. I am an avid urbanist and lover of cities; I write, speak, and draw ideas and theories on how they work, how they don't, how we map them, and what they can become. I was trained in design at Penn and worked in landscape architecture for several years with SWA Group on projects including the Shanghai Financial Tower, the Burj Khalifa Tower Park, Stanford University's Campus, and re-imagining the oldest brewery in Freising, Germany (yes, we got to sample the beer). I am a 20-time NCAA All-American swimmer; after college, I started open-water swimming in San Francisco and got hooked: I've completed the Escape From Alcatraz 7 times, swam San Francisco's solo 5-mile Bridge to Bridge, San Francisco's 9-mile Prison to Prison swim (as one of two women to first complete the swim on June 19, 2011). * Personally, that sounds way too fancy for me--I just enjoy the water, and I love the idea of moving your body between air and fluid. I am writing a book (or two) about swimming. Sometimes I call myself an amateur photographer and community enthusiast, which translates to someone who posts photos far too frequently to Path, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other devices made for sharing beautiful images of the world. The good news is that I'm the same in person: I love sharing, swimming, conversation, thinking, and making this piece of land we've got a little bit better each day. I also try to do handstands every day. |
